NC Pre-K Overview
The NC Pre-K Program is designed to provide high-quality educational experiences to enhance school readiness for eligible four-year-old children.
NC Pre-K emphasizes the following:
-
- Approaches to play and learning
- Emotional and social development
- Health and physical development
- Language development and communication
- Cognitive development
Pre-K focuses on socializing your child and getting him or her prepared for Kindergarten. And with small group sizes, 5-day in-person classes, and a curriculum taught by certified teachers, your child will receive important one-on-one attention they need to prepare for kindergarten!

Pre-K Program Length & School Year
NC Pre-K provides a full 6.5-hour instructional day program, 5 days a week. The program runs from August through June. Extended day services (before- and after-school care) are also available at a cost.
Demand often exceeds our available classroom space, so we encourage families to apply early to secure their slot.
Eligibility / Registration Requirements
To qualify for this free, state-funded program, families must meet eligibility requirements. The child must be four years old on or before August 31 of the program year. You may qualify if you meet a certain income threshold, are a military family, have a child with a special need, or have a child whom has never been in childcare before.
